2023-2024 Recipient of the Charlotte Brozer Shapiro Paper Prize

Congratulations to Alison Murphy!
“I wrote my paper, "The Modernization of European Jewish Marriages: An Avenue of Freedom for Married Jewish Women", in Professor Rozenblit's senior seminar course, HIST408Y: Jewish Women in Modernity. Throughout the semester, we read and analyzed various memoirs by Jewish women in Europe during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. As the semester progressed, I noticed the impact of European modernization on Jewish women, specifically regarding their view of marriage. In my final research paper, I decided to explore the outcomes of the transition from traditional marriages to love marriages concerning the lives and freedoms of Jewish women. I used the personal accounts of many European Jews from published memoirs and archival pieces. With Professor Rozenblit's guidance, I learned the process of writing a historical research paper and explored an extremely interesting area of European History. I want to thank Professor Rozenblit for her support and I want to congratulate Caroline for her remarkable research paper." Alison Murphy
