Strategic Crossroads: China-Israel Engagement in a Shifting Middle East

College of Arts and Humanities | Joseph and Alma Gildenhorn Institute for Israel Studies | Joseph and Rebecca Meyerhoff Program and Center for Jewish Studies Monday, April 28, 2025 12:30 pm - 2:00 pm Virtual

This engaging talk delves into the evolving dynamics of China-Israel relations, set against the complex backdrop of Middle Eastern geopolitics and the growing China-US rivalry. Over the years, China's role in the region has shifted from a cautious observer to an active player, driven by strategic goals like securing energy resources and advancing its ambitious Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). Since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1992, the China-Israel relationship has transformed from a focus on military and technological collaboration to a thriving economic partnership, with China emerging as one of Israel's largest trading partners. Yet, significant challenges remain, including cultural differences, limited Israeli market access, and the influence of US policies. This lecture will unpack the intricate web of economic, political, and security factors shaping this dynamic relationship within the ever-changing and volatile landscape of the Middle East.

Prof. Michal Zelcer-Lavid is a lecturer at the Department of Asian Studies and former chair of the Department of Multidisciplinary Studies in Humanities at Bar-Ilan University. Her current research focuses on nationalism and ethnic identity in Tibetan and Uyghur minorities. Prof. Zelcer-Lavid offers an integrative multi-disciplinary approach that incorporates literary interpretation, politics, and political science methodology in her research. Another research interest is East-West Asia relations, and she seeks to disprove the dichotomy between the Middle East and East Asia and examine the historical, religious, political, and cultural space that links these parts of the continent.  Prof. Zelcer-Lavid studied in Israel, China, and Germany and has written several articles and book chapters.
