Pushing Back and Leaning In on Israel: Jewish Activist Movements and Advocacy Organizations on the Left and Right Since Oct. 7th

College of Arts and Humanities | Joseph and Alma Gildenhorn Institute for Israel Studies | Joseph and Rebecca Meyerhoff Program and Center for Jewish Studies Monday, November 25, 2024 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm Virtual

Dr. Elizabeth Stein will discuss how Jewish activist movements and political advocacy organizations across the political spectrum in the U.S. and Canada have responded to the 2023-2024 Israel-Hamas war. The talk will focus on the positions, messaging, and strategies of organizations and movements ranging from AIPAC on the right to the liberal-Zionist and "two-state-solution" JStreet to the non-Zionist and anti-Zionist IfNotNow and Jewish Voice for Peace. How has their activism changed since October 7th and the Israel-Hamas war, and how have Jews, in particular young adults, responded?

Dr. Elizabeth Stein holds the Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Y&S Nazarian Center for Israel Studies at the University of California, Los Angeles for 2023-2025. Her research focuses on organized activism and political mobilization concerning Israel among Jews in the U.S., France, and Canada since the late 1970s. Her dissertation, which she is developing into a manuscript, received an Honorable Mention from the International Relations and Religion section of the International Studies Association (ISA). Dr. Stein also lectures a course on Diaspora Politics in UCLA’s Dept. of Political Science. She received her doctorate from Queen's University, Canada in August 2023.
