This event aims to examine the role of the media in shaping public perceptions and understanding of the Israel-Hamas conflict, with a specific focus on international and Israeli media perspectives. The speakers will explore the nuances of coverage, including biases, framing, and the challenges of reporting from conflict zones to show how different narratives emerge and evolve, influencing global perspectives on the complex geopolitical realities at play. Special attention will be given to the ethical considerations involved in reporting on conflicts, the use of digital and social media, and the impact of media narratives on public opinion and international responses.
Dr. Anat Balint is the Jeffrey B. Plevan Chair in Israel Studies at the University of Arizona. Before arriving in Arizona, she was an Israel Institute Visiting Scholar and Coordinator of the Jewish Studies Program at San Jose State University. Dr. Balint is a media scholar who specializes in the political economy of the media and the politics of Israeli media. She was a journalist for Ha'aretz and an adjunct lecturer in the Department of Communication at Tel Aviv University. Dr. Balint has written extensively on the inner workings of Israeli media and politics. She is an activist for media ethics and freedom of the press in Israel and a frequent commentator in the media on these issues.
Dr. Marwa Maziad is a Visiting Lecturer of Israel Studies at the University of Maryland, a former Non-resident Scholar with the Middle East Institute’s Defense and Security Program and a Senior Faculty Fellow at American University’s Center for Israel Studies in Washington, D.C. Dr. Maziad specializes in comparative civil-military relations, with a focus on the United States, Egypt, Israel, Turkey and the Gulf States. Dr. Maziad held academic faculty positions at Qatar University and Northwestern University in Qatar and published extensively on Middle East Security affairs.
