Making an Umma: Kinship, Race, and New Methods for Muslim History

The Meyerhoff Center for Jewish Studies host Dr. Rachel Schine as our third Five Points lecture speaker.  This lecture invites scholars to reflect on five statements, questions, or quotations that have driven their research agenda or their outlook on teaching. 

Schine talk focuses on how to interweave histories of family, ethnicity, and the production of race in Arabic-speaking Muslim societies in order to arrive at a long-durée picture.

 

Rachel Schine is an assistant professor of Arabic and History at the University of Maryland. Her work focuses on Muslim literatures and social histories from the 7th-15th century. Her first book, Black Knights: Arabic Epic and the Making of Medieval Race, recently published in November 2024, with The University of Chicago Press is now available.
