Join the Meyerhoff Program and Center for a panel discussion, to explore the rich history of Jewish women's contributions to the feminist movement and and the field of academic women's studies. 

Profile Photo of Evelyn Beck

Evelyn Torton Beck, Emerita Professor of Women Studies and a founder of the field, both nationally and at the University of Maryland.  Beck holds Ph.Ds. in both Comparative Literature and Clinical Psychology. She is an Alum Research Fellow with the Creative Longevity and Wisdom Initiative at the Fielding Graduate University.  She has pioneered numerous interdisciplinary courses on topics as diverse as Women in the Arts, Mothers and Daughters, Jewish Women in International Perspective, Women and the Holocaust, Death and Dying in Modern Literature, Lesbian Studies, Gender, Power and the Spectrum of Difference, and Feminist Perspectives on Psychology, among others. Beck has authored numerous books and essays focusing on Franz Kafka and the Yiddish Theater, Frida Kahlo, and Isaac Bashevis Singer (with whom she worked closely and whose stories she translated from the Yiddish).  Evelyn will discuss 'Jewish Women's Studies in Process-- Formations and Transformations on a Field'.

Lisa Leff

Lisa Leff, is a historian of European and Jewish history, specializing in the history of Jews in France at American University.  She is the author of Sacred Bonds of Solidarity: The Rise of Jewish Internationalism in Nineteenth Century France (2006), Colonialism and the Jews (2017) and The Archive Thief: the Man Who Salvaged French Jewish History in the Wake of the Holocaust (2015), which received the 2016 Sami Rohr Prize for Jewish literature. She was named American University's 2017 Scholar-Teacher of the Year. 

Shirelle Maya Doughty

Shirelle Maya Doughty holds an MA from the Meyerhoff Program and Center for Jewish Studies at the University of Maryland and is currenlty completing a dissertation on women in the Jewish Enlightenment (haskalah) at the University of California, Berkeley.  Shirelle's research examines modern Hebrew and Yiddish literary and visual cultures, focusing on their role in mediating changing ideals and norms surrounding gender, love, marriage, and sex from the 19th century through the 1930s.  This spring, Shirelle will be teaching 'Jewry of Muscle: Zionism and Jewish Masculinity' for Israel Studies and Jewish Studies at the University of Maryland. 

Mindy Shapiro

Mindy Shapiro, MA, was the first Women Studies major at University of Maryland creating the major through Independent Studies.  Mindy went on to get an MA in Women’s Studies at GWU.  Mindy was a long time Jewish communal professional (Hillel, founding director of Rosh Hodesh: It’s a Girl Thing!, a founder of the Center for Contemporary Mussar).
