The Iranian Talmud: Locating the Babylonian Talmud in the Sasanian Empire

Joseph and Rebecca Meyerhoff Program and Center for Jewish Studies Thursday, October 26, 2017 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm Francis Scott Key Hall, 121

Structured as a commentary on the Mishnah - a legal work compiled in c. 200 CE Roman Palestine - the Babylonian Talmud is a product of the neighboring Sasanian Empire. How might locating theTalmud in its Sasanian context reorient the way we read this central Jewish text, and help us better understand Babylonian Jewry and its medieval and modern inheritors?

Shai Secunda is The Jacob Neusner Associate Professor of Judaism at Bard College, where he teaches Judaism and Zoroastrianism in the Religion Department.

This event is co-sponsored with the Nathan and Jeanette Miller Center for Historical Studies and the Roshan Institute for Persian Studies.
