Shirelle holds an MA from the Meyerhoff Program and Center for Jewish Studies at the University of Maryland and is currently completing a dissertation on women in the Jewish Enlightenment (haskalah) at the University of California, Berkeley. Shirelle's research examines modern Hebrew and Yiddish literary and visual cultures, focusing on their role in mediating changing ideals and norms surrounding gender, love, marriage, and sex from the 19th century through the 1930s. This spring, Shirelle will be teaching ‘Jewry of Muscle: Zionism and Jewish Masculinity’ for Israel Studies and Jewish Studies.
