A comparison of the Book of Kings and inscriptions on Phoenician royal sarcophagi sheds light on the techniques of history writing in the ancient Levant.  These techniques are evident in the historical perspectives that shaped the dynastic promise given to Jehu in 2 Kings 10:30, as well as the presentation of his ruling house’s history in 2 Kings 13–15.

Matthew Suriano is Assistant Professor of Jewish Studies at the University of Maryland, and is a member of the Tel Burna Archaeological Excavation in Israel.  His research engages questions related to the history and culture of the Hebrew Bible and ancient Israel.
