The Lives and Works of the Maharal of Prague and the Humanist Jacques Bongars: a Reappraisal

Joseph and Rebecca Meyerhoff Program and Center for Jewish Studies Monday, November 11, 2013 12:30 pm - 2:00 pm Susquehanna Hall, 3105

This lecture will present new perspectives on the Maharal of Prague and his circle. The paper will attempt to show how the discovery of an unknown document can shake our understanding of key figures of the sixteenth century -- in this case a Jew and a Christian humanist- and lead us to question our methods of interpreting their writings.

Joanna Weinberg is a reader in Hebrew and Jewish Studies at the University of Oxford and Catherine Lewis fellow in rabbinics at the Oxford Centre for Hebrew and Jewish Studies.
