England remained largely resistant to 'German' Biblical Criticism until Anglican scholars finally confronted it in the 1860s. Jews, mindful of their still tenuous place in Victorian society, initially joined in this struggle, until the emergence of a Jewish critical scholar forced them to take a different tack.
Edward Breuer teaches Jewish history at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. His work focuses on medieval and modern Jewish intellectual history, specializing in the Jewish Enlightenment of the 18th and 19th centuries. He is currently the Perlow Visiting Associate Professor of Jewish Studies at Yale University.
