Rabbi Marcus Jastrow's (1829-1903) Activities In Poland And The USA: A Comparative Perspective

Joseph and Rebecca Meyerhoff Program and Center for Jewish Studies Wednesday, October 9, 2013 4:30 pm - 6:00 pm Susquehanna Hall, 3105

Rabbi Marcus Jastrow (1829-1903) was one of the most important figures of nineteenth-century Judaism.  His career was divided between Europe, where he was a preacher and rabbi in Warsaw, Mannheim and Worms, and the United States, where he served as rabbi of Congregation Rodeph Shalom in Philadelphia.  To this day, his dictionary of the Targumim and Talmud serves students learning Talmud. His activities provide a great opportunity to compare and analyze the religious life and thoughts of a “progressive” rabbi in the Polish (European) and American context.

Michał T. Galas is Associate Professor at the Institute of Jewish Studies of the Jagiellonian University (Krakow, Poland) and President of the Polish Association for Jewish Studies; this semester also Visiting Professor at the Skalny Center for Polish and Central European Studies, University of Rochester NY.
