Adi Mahalel's book attends to the works of I. L. Peretz, locating them within the rise of modern Jewish culture and politics. Peretz's stories, essays, poetry, and correspondence are engagingly discussed in their broader contexts, as well in their finer artistic and ideological nuances.
By offering close readings of Peretz's work, in Yiddish and Hebrew, and by examining the ways he revolutionized the means of artistic production, the book recasts the way political activism is understood.
