The Demonization of Jews in Antiquity and its Modern Repercussions

Joseph and Rebecca Meyerhoff Program and Center for Jewish Studies Tuesday, November 14, 2017 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm Susquehanna Hall, 1117

The hatred of Jews has increased in Europe and the Americas over the last decades. Armin Lange argues that contemporary Jew hatred draws on ancient traditions. To effectively fight anti-Semitism, a cultural forgetting of anti-Semitic prejudices and stereotypes needs to be achieved, i.e. the cultural and religious memories of Western and Islamic worlds needs to be changed.

Armin Lange is the Director of the Institute of Jewish Studies at Vienna University and the Professor for Second Temple Judaism. Lange is a corresponding member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and is general editor of the Textual History of the Bible. His research focuses on the study of (ancient) Anti-Semitism, the Dead Sea Scrolls, and the Textual and Canonical Histories of the Bible.

This talk will be presented by Professor Armin Lange from the University of Vienna, Institute for Jewish Studies.

The event is co-sponsored by the Nathan and Jeanette Miller Center for Historical Studies.
